About Dr Choy Su-Ling
Dr. Choy Su-Ling is Malaysia’s first Academic Language Therapist certified by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) and trained in the Orton-Gillingham Approach accredited by AOGPE and the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), and the Multisensory Structured Language (Australia Dyslexia Association). She obtained her Ph.D. in 2013 from University Malaya where she was trained in the art of communication, language, and writing. Her seniors include such acclaimed National Literary Awardees (Sasterawan Negara) including A. Samad Said, Abdullah Hussain, and S. Othman Kelantan. As an alumnus of this academic literary heritage, she completed her Bachelor’s degree and graduated at top of her class with Honours and two book prizes.
Dr. Choy wrote for The Star for eight years and honed her writing skills under the guidance of some of the most experienced Senior Editors from The Star. In 2005, she was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Fellow by the Institute of Dance Criticism, Duke University (USA) in recognition of her work in arts journalism. She also wrote speeches for C-suite executives and Ministers, press releases, crisis statements, and annual reports.
Dr. Choy was mentored by two senior Orton-Gillingham Fellows from both the Orton and Gillingham lineage. As a certified structured literacy or dyslexia specialist, she provides targeted one-to-one reading instruction to children with complex reading and writing profiles. She has successfully taught children with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, Global Development Delay, and Asperger’s to read, spell, and write with the multisensory structured language approach. A committed allied health professional, she works closely with speech therapists, occupational therapists, educational and clinical psychologists, child specialists, pediatricians, developmental pediatricians, special education needs teachers, primary, kindergarten, and preschool teachers, and Learning Support Units and Special Education Needs department at schools, to help children develop lifelong reading skills.
